Sir Anthony Hopkins' "2008 SCREAM" Appearance Benefits Cancer Project's Vegan Program for Cancer Survivors

At Legendary Actor's Request, Spike TV's "2008 SCREAM"
Donates $25,000 to Fund the Cancer Project's National Network of Nutrition and Cooking Classes

WASHINGTON—When Sir Anthony Hopkins receives the first-ever Legend Award at the "2008 SCREAM" awards on Spike TV on Tuesday night, his appearance will fund healthy vegan classes for cancer patients offered by the Cancer Project, a national nonprofit organization working to educate the public about the benefits of a healthy diet for cancer prevention and survival.

At Sir Anthony's request, producers of the event will make a donation of $25,000 to the Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit in honor of the actor and his work to fight cancer. The donation will help fund the Cancer Project's cancer-prevention nutrition and cooking classes in cities across the United States.

Sir Anthony has a history of supporting the Cancer Project's efforts. In 2004, he narrated a hugely successful television public service announcement that highlighted the link between diet and cancer. The lifesaving message has reached hundreds of thousands of people.

Sir Hopkins may be best known for his role in "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991), for which he won the Oscar for Best Actor. The third annual televised "SCREAM" event was taped Saturday, Oct. 18, at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles and premieres Tuesday, Oct. 21, from 9 to 11 p.m. (ET/PT) on Spike TV.

"Anthony Hopkins' generous support of the Cancer Project will save many lives," says Neal Barnard, M.D., president of the Cancer Project. "Many Americans do not realize that healthy eating habits can help prevent cancer, so our classes teach the importance of avoiding high-fat meat products and consuming more fruits, vegetables, and other vegetarian foods."

For more information or an interview with Dr. Barnard, contact Tara Failey at 202-527-7319 or tfailey@pcrm.org, or Patrick Sullivan at 510-834-860 or psullivan@cancerproject.org.

The Cancer Project is a collaborative effort of physicians, researchers, and nutritionists who have joined together to educate the public about the benefits of a healthy diet for cancer prevention and survival. Based in Washington, D.C., the Cancer Project is a program of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
